Sultanbeyli Distict

Sultanbeyli is one of the 39 districts of Istanbul. Its population is 360,702 and the population increased by 12% between 2015 and 2023. Since 2014, there has been an intense outward migration to the district, mainly from Syrian refugees. With an average household size of 4.13, the district is above the average for Istanbul and Turkey.

The average age in Sultanbeyli is around 29 years; the population over the age of 65 constitutes 8.3% of the total population. This population structure shows that the district has a young population distribution. Looking at the education statistics in Sultanbeyli, 20.1% of the population is primary school graduates, 7.7% is primary school graduates, 19.8% is middle school graduates, 18.5% is high school graduates, and 10.7% is college or faculty graduates.

Workplaces in the district are concentrated in the fast-moving consumer goods, construction, social services, textile and industry sectors; while small and medium-sized enterprises are the majority. 11% of the workplaces are in manufacturing and the industry has not developed much. According to 2020 survey data, nearly half of the households in the district (45%) declared that they have a monthly income of minimum wage or less (2020 minimum wage is approximately 250 dollars). Therefore, it can be said that the rate of households in need of social assistance is high in the district.

In the Socioeconomic Development Ranking of Districts Survey conducted by the Ministry of Industry and Technology, a total of 56 variables in the dimensions of demographics, education, health, finance, employment and social security, competitiveness, innovation and quality of life are used to determine the development index. According to the socioeconomic development index data, Sultanbeyli has the lowest socioeconomic level in Istanbul.

Mimar Sinan Neighborhood

Socioeconomic support was provided to 2.39 people per 1000 inhabitants in the district and the neighborhood with the highest socioeconomic support is Mimar Sinan Neighborhood with 4.30. The population of Mimar Sinan neighborhood is 25,088 people. Mimar Sinan Neighborhood is a neighborhood where disadvantaged groups such as Syrian refugees and Roma citizens reside in addition to the local population. There are 2 Family Health Centers providing primary health care services in the neighborhood and a total of 11 family physicians provide services. Sultanbeyli State Hospital is within walking distance to the neighborhood. Sultanbeyli Social Service Directorate is also located in Mimar Sinan Neighborhood. There are 10 primary and 6 secondary schools in the neighborhood.

The most common diseases in Sultanbeyli are chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and asthma. The prevalence of diabetes is 21.7%, hypertension 18.9% and asthma 11.8%.

Although there are no current data on the prevalence of obesity in adults and children, it can be said that it is a priority problem in terms of its association with diabetes and hypertension.

Istanbul

It is the largest city in Turkey with a population of 15,655,924. 49.8% of the population is male and 50.2% is female. The average age in Istanbul is around 34. The average household size is 3.2. When we look at the education statistics in Istanbul; 18.8% of the population are primary school graduates, 5.9% are primary school graduates, 16.6% are middle school graduates, 24.5% are high school graduates, 22.8% are college or faculty graduates. Labor force participation in Istanbul is 54%. There is a large gap between women (35.8%) and men (72.5%) in this indicator (2021). 67.7% of workers are employed in services, 31.9% in industry (21% of the total industrial workforce in Turkey) and 0.5% in agriculture.
